A group of 41 leader farmers from Taluwa , Okhaldhunga are trained on agro forestry development and management. Volunteers Initiative Nepal in support of Friends of Volunteers Initiative Nepal Netherland has organized a 5 days training to farmers. An expert on Agro forestry and Agro farm from Kathmandu was a trainer. The major objective of the training was to train leader farmers on technical methods of promoting agro forestry. It will help them to initiate agro forestry in communities. It ensures sufficient forage for cattle’s in nearby field, preserve natural water resources, save women’s time, increase productivity of land, encourage farmer to keep more cattle in house, can adopt other income generation activities etc.
The five days training was focused on introduction and importance of Agro forestry, Nursery, Types of Nursery, Practical session of Nursery development, Practical session of seed treatment, Practical session of plantation and nursery management, Plantation and seeding practical session, What is Vegetables?, Importance of vegetables, Importance of seasonal and unseasonal vegetables, Discussion on vegetable farming technologies, Vegetable farming and nursery practical trainings, Management of pests and insects in vegetable farming, Agro forestry, daleghas and bhuighas cutting, Discussion on importance of cutting, Preparation of agro forestry development calendar, and Preparation of agro forestry development plan. Farmers were practically involved in different activities of agro forestry. Also they were provided equipments and seeds for vegetables and grasses to make nursery. Leader farmers were motivated to train other farmers from communities.
It was found that the training organized by VIN has trained 41 farmers about agro forestry. The training was successfully completed with practical sessions and farmers got equipments and seeds to start it. It is also proved by the views expressed by one of the farmer- “The training was a great for us to start in our households. The simple techniques I got to learn in these five days have also motivated me to start agro forestry in my field. I will definitely continue the skills I learnt from here.” Santosh Ghimire, Taluwa
