VIN’s water research volunteer Han Zhang- Environment Consultant and Project Facilitator from China with VIN’s team conducted a campaign on water contamination and treatment in Jitpurphedi. Focused on ward 8 and 9 of Jitpurphedi VDC, the project was designed to investigate on water supply, water quality of drinking water supply channel and water contamination and treatment based on finding.
The team first looked in to the condition of water supply condition and ways to improve it. The team also was concerned to find the alternative sources of water. Both the water supply condition and alternative sources were found to be in very poor condition. People had to walk a long way to fetch drinkable water. Some of the sources even got destroyed because of the earthquake and the existing water source would not provide enough supply. Besides, the team also uncovered the contamination seen in the water people used for drinking purpose. Especially Chohgaun and Kisandole village of ward 9 were experiencing the contamination.
The research team did not just stop in exploring the problem of drinking water. It also came up with some possible solutions for it. Since it was the families who contaminated the water, the purification steps were started for the house hold level itself.
The team members first started with the awareness campaign. The villagers were informed about how the water they are consuming is contaminated and how they need to purify the water before they drink. They were also made aware on improving the sanitation/hygiene to prevent fecal pollution in water. To make the awareness even more effective, different posters were patched in the public palaces. This has aware the villagers so well that they have now started to drink purified water and are careful not to contaminate the water sources as far as possible. They have adopted different strategy of water filtration like solar filtration and are enjoying healthy drinking water.
