Bullying remains a significant concern in schools worldwide, and Nepal is no exception. Understanding the significant impact bullying has on students’ well-being, the YWC Child Protection Team recently organized an enlightening awareness session aimed at raising consciousness about bullying and equipping students with the tools to identify, prevent, and stand up against it.
An Engaging and Interactive Session
Held at the Community School, the session was designed to develop an open conversation on the subject of bullying, a topic that often goes under-discussed. The YWC team used real-life examples, role-playing, and interactive discussions to ensure that the students fully understood the different forms of bullying, including physical, verbal, and emotional bullying. Through engaging activities, students were encouraged to share their own experiences and thoughts, breaking the silence and stigma around the issue.
The session not only educated students about the harmful effects of bullying but also emphasized the importance of standing up for one another. Students were given the opportunity to learn how to identify bullying behaviors and how to support victims of bullying. The goal was to create a safe space where every student felt empowered to take action when they witnessed bullying.
The State of Bullying in Nepal
The statistics on bullying in Nepal are deeply concerning. Research reveals that:
- Over 60% of children in Nepal report experiencing bullying at school, highlighting the widespread nature of the issue.
- Verbal bullying is the most common form, affecting both boys and girls equally.
- More than 30% of students in Nepal have witnessed bullying but have not reported it, indicating a lack of awareness and the reluctance to speak out.
These figures reflect a larger, global challenge, but with the right tools, awareness, and community support, bullying can be significantly reduced.
A Call to Action
VIN believes that awareness is the first step in creating change. By educating students about the risks and consequences of bullying, they can become active participants in building a safer, more inclusive school environment. The team emphasized the importance of reporting bullying incidents and offering support to those who may be affected.
