A VIN medical team and health volunteers have visited Universal Social Welfare Children home, Budhanilkantha for health and hygiene campaign with children. The medical team had examined children. Children were provided toothbrushes and tooth paste. They were involved in teeth brushing activities. Also they were trained on correct hand washing with soap water.
At the orphanage there were 13 children ranging from 4-17 years old. The main health problems found amongst the children were skin infections, mosquito bites, dental caries, and dental tartar, poor condition of their nails, diarrhoeal diseases and angular stomatitis (a sign of lack of vitamins).
It was attempted to address the problems of skin infections, poor nail condition and diarrhoeal diseases through education about hand washing. The dental caries and dental tartar was addressed through teaching tooth brushing. The angular stomatitis was addressed by educating the staff regarding diet.
Children were enthusiastic to learn how to wash their hands properly, and it seems that it was uncommon for them to have soap with which to wash their hands in that orphanage. They were provided toothbrushes and toothpaste and demonstrated how to brush their teeth.
The Mother and staffs at the orphanage were encouraged to vary the diet for the children and encouraged them to buy fresh fruit and vegetables for the children. It is concluded that the health camp conducted by VIN at child home was effective to teach children hygiene and sanitation. It is recommended that the health camp program should be conducted in regular basis and should extend to other child home.
Health volunteers were happy to see the children and teach them hygiene and sanitation. They were enthusiastic to know how the children will continue the education they learnt. It was a good opportunity for volunteers to visit orphanage and contribute in teaching teeth brushing and hand washing techniques to children. Do you want to be a part of this? Join us…
