5th of December marks the International Volunteer Day and for this year its theme was ‘Volunteers build resilient communities’. On this day, everyone in the world celebrates the contribution of volunteers make in the communities by recognizing and appreciating them. To celebrate this day, Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN) organized a program to commemorate all its EU Aid Volunteers, international as well as national volunteers working for various community development projects. Six EUAV, and 24 international and national volunteers participated in this program which was held at VIN office itself. The program was for around 5 hours where the volunteers were involved in various fun and exciting activities related with Volunteerism.
The program started with the basic introduction of volunteers with each other along with their experience sharing about their projects. The second session was related with outreach activity where the volunteers were divided into 4 groups and each group had to go out and interact with the local people around the area and discuss about their knowledge on volunteerism. Then they had to come back and share their experience talking with the local people. All the four groups were spread around the office area and talked with youths, men and women and also distributed the brochures of VIN. All the volunteers were happy to interact with the local people.
The third session was a competition to show the creativity of the volunteers. In this activity, the volunteers were divided into eight groups with four people in each group. In this creative activity, the volunteers had to use their creative side and do some activities related with volunteerism. The first group (Patricia, Rebecca, Sarah and Aline) mimicked about the activities done in VIN and about its strength. The second group (Monika, Jac, Basile and Razni) presented what volunteering meant for them. The third group (Anil, Chiara, Niki and Uma) caricatured about the unity. The fourth group (Li, Chloe Pistilli, Morgane and Anup) presented how volunteering is written in different languages around the world. The fifth group (Kristel, Pawel, Chloe Parpaleix and Jessica) did an act where they had a program called “Who wants to be a volunteer?” to find the suitable candidate to volunteer at VIN. Various pros and cons of volunteering were discussed by the sixth group (Florine, Romina, Carmelo and Marine). The seventh group (Yannick, Alessandra, Raphael, Diwakar) showed how a person without any perspective comes to volunteer in Nepal and gets enlightenment. And the final and eighth group (Sophie, Dil and Clement) mimed an act which showed a cycle of helping people around.
At the end the volunteers themselves selected the two winning groups depending upon their performance and creativity. Group 5 (Kristel, Pawel, Chloe Parpaleix and Jessica) were the winners of this competition and Group 8 (Sophie, Dil and Clement) bagged the first runner up prize. Both of these groups were provided with a Laughing Buddha as their winning prize. The program ended with chocolate distribution to all the volunteers and with a final group photo.
