The final course of my medical study at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam consisted of an elective course in the field of public health in Nepal. I chose to perform this course to expand my physical as well as mental borders and gain knowledge about public health and medical care in a third world country while living from home. Almost a year ago I conducted a search to find an opportunity provided by the International Federation of Medical Students’ Association (IFMSA) to go on an Public health and Medical care internship in Kathmandu, Nepal organized by Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN). After various visits to the International Bureau of Collaboration (BIS) of the VU all paperwork was organized and finally the time came to go into this adventure.
I had to perform two work while I was doing internship on public health and medical care. My first project was WASH project under which I conducted a baseline survey about the water, sanitation and hygiene status (WASH) of the population of the Tarkeshwor coomunity ward 4. In the projcet I obtained and analyzed data of 311 households.
Similalry I was involved in another task i.e. the local health post at Kavresthali. The major aim of invovling in the health post was to improve the status of public health and medical care of the area. While working in there I had provided First Aid training to the local female health volunteers and participated in a free health campaign organized by one of the big Kathmandu hospitals where 300 patients were able to receive the necessary care.
