Transforming Lives in Okhaldhunga: The Impact of Volunteering in Rural Nepal – Sept 2024 update

Volunteers Initiative Nepal (ViN) has catalyzed significant change in Okhaldhunga. Our diverse volunteer programs have attracted international volunteers who have made a tangible difference in the region. From teaching English to leading public health campaigns, our volunteers have uplifted the communities they’ve worked in. Their efforts have not only improved the lives of the residents but also provided a unique and meaningful experience for the volunteers. Here’s how our volunteering in rural Nepal is making a lasting impact.

Key Achievements:

Teaching English and Digital Literacy:

ViN’s children’s education programs have made a mark in Okhaldhunga, mainly through teaching English and computer literacy programs at the NaraTika Community Learning Center. Sunita, one of our passionate volunteers, dedicated her time to teaching English in Nepal, helping 39 students improve their English speaking and comprehension. Meanwhile, Mirza led digital literacy workshops, providing computer literacy programs to 47 students and equipping them with the skills needed in a technology-driven world. These volunteer opportunities for teaching English in rural Nepal ensure students gain valuable skills for their future.

Community Engagement through Stakeholder Meetings:

ViN hosted several stakeholder meetings in community development, collaborating with school management committees, headteachers, and local ward presidents. The discussions focused on forming and supporting youth and children’s clubs in Nepal, ensuring these young leaders have access to resources and training that foster personal growth and community service. These engagements have been pivotal in sustaining the impact of community learning centers and fostering local leadership.

Empowering Children through Club Formation:

As part of our youth and children’s clubs initiative, we established clubs in six schools, engaging over 120 students in leadership training and social activities. This initiative demonstrated how to start a children’s club in a community school, providing a platform for students to explore leadership roles and build community connections. ViN continues to promote child club formation and training in schools across Okhaldhunga by forming these clubs and offering students opportunities to contribute to their communities.

Public Health Campaigns in Rural Villages:

Our public health volunteer programs expanded to remote areas like Taluwa, Thulachhap, and Bhadaure. Soline and Sophie, two dedicated public health volunteers, led public health campaigns in Nepal, providing health screenings for diabetes and blood pressure to over 227 community members. These efforts are part of ViN’s volunteer-run health campaigns in remote Nepalese villages, focusing on preventative care for adults over 40. These public health volunteer opportunities for diabetes and blood pressure in Nepal are vital in addressing the needs of underserved populations.

Women’s Empowerment through Surveys:

Continuing our commitment to women’s empowerment projects, Bente and Andriana conducted baseline surveys in Taluwa, Bhadaure, and Thulachhap, interviewing over 227 women. These surveys help us understand women’s challenges, allowing ViN to design women’s empowerment volunteer projects in Okhaldhunga that truly address their needs. This work supports women in becoming economically independent and encourages them to take on leadership roles within their communities.
