Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN) is a non-profit organisation that has been transforming rural communities through volunteer programs and internships in Nepal since 2005. VIN’s mission focuses on empowering marginalised groups in remote areas of Nepal, especially women and children. By leveraging the skills of both international volunteers and local interns, VIN creates a meaningful impact in education, environmental conservation, women’s empowerment, and public health.
In September 2024, VIN welcomed 30 volunteers—25 international and five national—representing diverse countries like France, Italy, the UK, and the USA. They engaged in impactful projects, ranging from teaching and sports education in Jitpurphedi to environmental projects at the World Peace Buddhist Monastery and medical support in Okhaldhunga. Each volunteer started with a cultural orientation, language training, and community placements to ensure a smooth transition into their roles.

Volunteering in Nepal: Highlights from September 2024
In September 2024, VIN welcomed a vibrant mix of 25 international and five national volunteers, all eager to contribute to various projects across Nepal. These volunteers came from diverse countries, including France, Italy, the UK, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Spain, and the USA. Their missions ranged from teaching at monasteries to environmental conservation and medical care in rural communities. While eight volunteers worked in Jitpurphedi, one focused on the World Peace Buddhist Monastery, and 16 were stationed in Okhaldhunga.

Engaging Volunteers: A Month of Activities
1. Induction: Welcoming New Volunteers
Every new volunteer starts with a comprehensive induction program that covers everything from health and cultural tips to basic Nepali language classes. In September, we held three orientation sessions to cater to our LMTV (Long and Medium Term Volunteer) and work camp volunteers. The inductions are more than just formalities—they’re a chance for volunteers to connect, learn about VIN’s mission, and understand their roles in their respective projects.
2. Discovering Nepal: Sightseeing Day
During the induction, VIN organised a sightseeing day in Kathmandu Valley. This cultural immersion allows volunteers to explore Nepal’s rich heritage, from the Durbar squares to sacred temples and stupas. This month, volunteers had the unique opportunity to experience the Indrajatra festival at Kathmandu Durbar Square, witnessing the vibrant traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism.
3. Community Placements: Hands-On Experience
After orientation, volunteers are placed in their respective host families or project sites, including monasteries, Jitpurphedi schools, and Okhaldhunga communities. VIN ensures each volunteer feels welcome and ready to start their journey, introducing them to local community members and familiarising them with their new environments. For many, this is where the real adventure begins.
4. Follow-Ups and Support: Keeping the Connection Strong
VIN’s team conducts regular follow-ups with volunteers to ensure their well-being and address any concerns. This includes weekly check-ins through field visits, virtual meetings, or even simple WhatsApp chats. Feedback on project progress, accommodation, and food are all part of the process. Our volunteers in Jitpurphedi and the monasteries received two in-person follow-ups this month, while national volunteers also received ongoing support.
5. Planning Ahead: Preparing for Future Volunteers
We plan to provide every volunteer with a customised work plan that matches their skills and project duration. These work plans enable volunteers to come prepared, ensuring smooth project execution. This month, we planned various activities for our LMTV and work camp volunteers, making their time in Nepal both efficient and fulfilling.
6. Celebrating Success: The Exit Ceremony
When a volunteer’s time with VIN ends, we give them a warm send-off through an exit ceremony. Volunteers share their experiences, fill out feedback forms, and receive certificates. A traditional Tika and Khada ceremony follows a short meeting with our Volunteer Manager or President. This heartfelt farewell sends them off with best wishes for their journey ahead.

Children’s Development through Sports
Cynthia and Soana, two dedicated volunteers, led sports education at Jitpurphedi School. Despite challenges like school holidays, our local facilitator, Sanju, organised evening sessions that allowed children to stay active. The students’ enthusiasm was palpable as they eagerly gathered for sports like volleyball, football, and badminton. This experience taught them new skills and created a bond between volunteers and the community’s young athletes.
Women’s Empowerment through Life Skills Training
Empowering women through life skills training remains a cornerstone of VIN’s mission. Volunteers like Bente Eva Klein and Adriana Verpalen engaged with local women, teaching them essential skills that build self-confidence and financial independence.
