VIN’s health volunteers, Karin and local volunteer, Debaki conducted water hygiene and sanitation (WASH) campaign in Kavresthali, Bhandari Gaun (Tarkeswore municipality ward 4) on June 20. After the completion of the campaign, as per the plan sketched for the program, VIN conducted health campaigns directed to subjects in health behaviour that can be improved as observed during the surveys.
There were altogether 13 women in the campaign that was held for 45 minutes. The content of the campaign was importance of hygiene and sanitation, hand washing techniques and timing, healthy use of toilet and its importance. The team used posters to demonstrate the techniques and the six steps of hand washing and maintaining hygiene and sanitation. At the end of session participants responded that they enjoined the campaign as they could learn new things regarding hygiene which they were not aware of before. Even the hand washing technique had been a lesson to the people in the area. In the following weeks the campaign will be held in whole of ward 4 Kavresthali by VIN volunteers.
The health status of the people living in the Bhandari Gaun is not satisfactory. Many families do not even have a toilet at their home. In ward-4, 83 families were found who did not have toilets in their houses. People are totally unaware of the issues and behaviour that can degrade their health condition. Having seen the low health status of people in the community, the awareness campaign was held as a part of WASH campaign which was targeted to those families who did not have access to toilets. The campaign was to motivate the families to build toilets in their houses and practice hygiene and sanitation. VIN has a plan to educate the families and support poor families to build toilets in near future.
