Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN) has supported farmer and encourage them towards organic farming by mobilizing National and international volunteers under Agrofarm Project.VIN gave training for the poor and uneducated farmer of Dalkap, Kavresthali. This compost manure training was focused on the importance of soil nutrition and compost manure. Both local volunteer (Sagar Dhital) and international volunteer (Tangi) helped to give session and support make compost manure by decomposing green leaves with local people.
The procedure to make compost manure is:-
- Selection of site to make compost pit.
- The pit was dug in 3’×2’×8” area and plastic was kept under so that the water from compost doesn’t flow to the soil.
- Unwanted green grasses and body parts of plants were collected and cut into small pieces.
- First, a layer of those green grasses was made and another layer was made from dried leaves (bamboo’s leaves)
- The mixture of both dry and green leaves was added sufficient water and mixed well.
- Finally, a pit was covered by plastic completely so that rain and wind do not affect the compost.
Precautions:-
- Select the site for preparing compost manure near the farm where proper sun lights can reach.
- Mix the compost every 15-20 days and the wastes from the kitchen can also be added while mixing. Apply water if necessary.
- Never add milk or milk by-product in compost.
- Use gloves and masks while mixing the compost.
Thus, produced manure is a good source of organic matter to the soil and can provide sufficient nutrition to the soil. This manure can be applied by both dust and liquid manure.
By dust method: – use 4-6 kg of this organic manure per plant.
By liquid method: – put the manure in water and filter the solution. This solution can be used in both ways manure and irrigation. This manure normally contains 0.9% of nitrogen 1% of phosphorus and 0.9% of potassium depending upon the material (green grasses and dried leaves) used. In summer it will take 3-4 months to become completemanure and in winter more than 4 months.
