Namaste! My name is Shanti Tamang, I am a 34-year-old farmer from Devisthan, Tarkeshwar Municipality. Two years ago, I had the opportunity to participate in an English class offered by Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN) at the Women’s Business Center (WBC) in Tinpiple, Tarkeshwar. At first, I hesitated to join because I thought learning English would be useless for someone like me, a farmer and a housewife. I was also worried it would interfere with my daily household activities. However, thanks to the encouragement of the women in my community, I decided to give it a try. Little did I know this decision would change my life in ways I never imagined.
The Impact of the English Class
The English class completely transformed my daily life and boosted my confidence in ways I never expected. Before joining the class, I had no formal education because my family couldn’t afford school fees when I was young. I started working at a very young age to support my family and while I have no regrets, I always felt I could have been a good student if given the chance. This class proved that to me. I discovered that I am a fast learner and within a short time, I was able to interact with international volunteers, teach basic English to my children, fill out bank forms and even type in English on my phone. These skills have made my life easier and more fulfilling. The class also gave me a sense of self-worth and confidence that I didn’t have before. I no longer feel limited by my lack of formal education. Instead, I feel empowered to learn new things and take on challenges.
Support from VIN
VIN’s English class was more than just a learning opportunity, it was a lifeline for women like me who never had the chance to go to school. The classes were designed to fit into our busy schedules, so I could attend without neglecting my household or farming responsibilities. The facilitators were patient and supportives and they created a welcoming environment where I felt comfortable learning at my own pace. VIN also provided all the materials we needed, making it easy for us to focus on learning.
A Bright Future with VIN’s Programs
Thanks to VIN, I now see myself as a role model for other women in my community. Many of them look up to me and ask for advice on how to balance learning with their daily responsibilities. My message to them is simple: “Please make time for such opportunities. It may seem funny to think about how useful learning languages can be for housewives like us, but trust me, no education is a waste of time.” I am excited about the future and hope VIN continues to offer programs like this to empower more women in rural Nepal. I also hope to see more women in my community take advantage of these opportunities and discover their potential, just as I did.
Why Education Matters
Education is one of the most powerful tools to improve our lives and communities. For women like me, who missed out on formal schooling, programs like VIN’s English class provide a second chance to learn and grow. These programs not only teach practical skills but also boost confidence and self-esteem, which are essential for personal and community development.
