Volunteers Initiative Nepal is a not-for-profit non-governmental organization working in Jitpurphedi community since 2007 in different development areas. VIN has different programs for community development such as Women’s Empowerment, Children’s Development, Youth Empowerment, Public Health & Medical, Environment Conservation and Disaster Risk Reduction. Among these, the Environment and Conservation is one of the important programs of the organization committed to raising awareness on environmental issues in rural communities.
The project I, Noralie van’t Klooster am currently working on is the Agro-farm project which is under the Environment and Conservation Program. Besides being a project that teaches farmers new eco-friendly farming techniques, this project has been empowering women as most of the farmers are women in rural areas. The main objective of this project is to make women financially independent by teaching them organic farming. I have been working with Laxmi, national volunteer and the community women for this project. These past few weeks, I have worked on various women’s farms helping them plant vegetables and pulling out weeds. Although the work is repetitive and can get boring at times, seeing the produce makes me glad to have worked in this project. Also, now we are focusing on teaching about online marketing so the women can promote their produce and reach more customers. I hope the efforts of these women bear fruit and they achieve success in online marketing in the near future.
